Safety Update

All,

It’s time to start thinking about fire safety as we transition into summer. With project season getting into full swing, the weather changing, and the first lightning strike fire of the season in Diamond Valley last week, it is time to start reinforcing fire safety. Here are some reminders of what we do here at Northstar:

  • Hot Work Program
    • See attached for guidelines on ALL outside Hot Work for our employees and 3rd party contractors as well.
  • Fire Extinguishers
    • All Northstar vehicles are required to have a working extinguisher that gets checked once a month. (Department specific trainings will be scheduled in the coming weeks.)
  • Red Flag Warning Day
    • A Red Flag Warning also known as a Fire Weather Warning and is a forecast to inform local firefighting and land management agencies that conditions are ideal for wildland fire ignition and rapid propagation. We do not allow outside “Hot Work” on these days. You can check daily at: http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/sto/cafw/fwfall.php?wfo=sto
  • No Smoking
    • There is a strict smoking ban on the mountain and throughout the village. There are a few designated smoking areas, please observe posted warnings and direct our employees and guests accordingly. See attached for talking points for guests.
  • Vehicles
    • When parking off pavement, vehicles should only park on dirt or gravel and never park over dry grass or shrubbery.
  • Defensible Space Checklist
    • If you are responsible for an on-hill building please use the attached defensible space checklist to ensure our structures are safe. Please scan and send back to Health and Safety.

Attached is an additional wildland fire facts and tips on fire safety. As we start on boarding summer employees please continue to communicate these points with your teams. It is important that we all work together to do our part in preventing the spread of wildfire on our mountain. If you have any questions or concerns please contact Health and Safety.
